Is it possible to use the ESTER enzymes to eliminate plastics in the ocean? No, this is not a feasible solution. The volume of the oceans is enormous, making it impractical to deliver enzymes in sufficient quantities to have a meaningful impact. Additionally, the conditions in the ocean—such as low temperatures, high UV radiation, and the presence of microorganisms would severely limit the activity and stability of the enzymes. They would degrade rapidly and lose their effectiveness. Moreover, introducing large quantities of enzymes into marine ecosystems could disrupt the natural balance, potentially affecting existing microorganisms and other marine life. A more sustainable approach is to focus on collecting and recycling plastic waste on land, where controlled environments enable the effective use of enzymes for plastic degradation.
